Fuzz N' Fluff Farm

Maremma Livestock Guardian Dogs    --- The PUPPIES are HERE! See bottom of page.

We use and breed Maremma sheep dogs, they stay with our sheep 24-7 and love their job, we have never lost any

livestock due to predation. Maremma dogs were bred for protecting flocks specifically against wolves, so that is just

what we needed.

Our dogs are not bred for pets, they are friendly to people, but are not suitable for pets, they need room to run and

a full time job of protecting livestock.

Maremmas originated in Italy and were used for guarding sheep and goats along with other livestock. Maremmas

are related to the Akbash, Kuvas, Pyreanean Mountain dogs and

Komondor.

They make excellent guard dogs because of their bravery, strong willedness

and independence. They have a scissor bite and are very fast and agile.  I

have seen them jump a 6 foot fence and I have witnessed them chasing

coyotes, they had no problem keeping up with it for a short distance, which

is long enough for them to make there kill!! I have to say, I was amazed!!

They work together as a team very well.

Please note: that we do not sell Maremma pups

or grown dogs to homes  without livestock, these are

strickly working dogs and we will not sell them as pets.

Our Method Of Puppy Training

If you have a puppy that needs to be trained, we also rent our neutered males as

trainers.

Puppies that are trained by older dogs have a much higher possibility of turning out to be

a great guardian dog than those raised by humans. One reason is because if a ewe

unexpectedly

lambs and you are not there, a young puppy WILL eat the new arrivals.

But with a single grown guardian, they will be disciplined and after

a few

whippings by their trainer they will just lick

the

lambs and not hurt them. This lesson is the

hardest one to teach a puppy, but with a

trained dog there are no worries.

Our dogs do a great job

and will train your puppy to be a great livestock

guardian if you agree to co-operate with them.

If you are interested in this method,

please contact us for further details.

$75 per neutered male per month. (Discounts for extended time periods.)

Before You Buy Suggestions

Before you purchase a LGD make sure you know the dog is good with newborn baby animals! We had to learn it the hard way, and before we were sure of what was happening we had lost over 5 lambs, a bad dog can cost you a lot of money!

If possible visit the dogs own farm, talk to the people and see what situation they keep their dogs in, are the dogs allowed to come to the house? do they sleep on the front porch? or stay with the animals 24 - 7 ? If the dog is kept in a situation similar to yours they most likely will work out.

It will take a LGD dog about 1-3 week to totally adjust to his/her new environment and people, let it alone and try not to pet and love on it unless you are sure it will not bite. Our dog would been fine and all of a sudden get scared and bite, so be careful for the first few weeks. Remember, LGD dog's are large and you would not want to get it mad at you!!
